Longview Lake
With more than 1 million visitors each season, it’s not hard to understand why Longview Lake has become one of the most popular summer destinations in the Kansas City area. Friends and neighbors are obviously spreading the good news — and increasing the number of annual guests who head to Longview for everything from power boating and water skiing to fishing, golf, swimming, hiking, softball games and family picnics.
Harry Truman Farm
Former president Harry S. Truman spent much of his childhood in Kansas City on his grandparents’ farm. In fact, his mother often said this farm is where Truman got his common sense. The house, which was built in 1894 for Truman’s maternal grandmother, served as his residence from 1906 to 1917 when he worked the farm before leaving for the war. The estate is now owned and operated by the National Park Service. The 5.25-acre farm includes the house and several outbuildings. Admission is free.
Grandview Historical Depot Museum
Features artifacts, displays, historical photographs, and antiques housed in the restored Kansas City Southern Railroad Depot, built in 1912.

Currently, Grandview has 13 parks totaling over 170 acres. The addition of 52 new acres of parkland adjacent to Meadowmere Park brings this total to over 200 acres. Grandview Trails and the Blue River Trail
Grandview currently maintains only 2.38 miles of trail. Most of this mileage is actually attributed to loop walks within existing parks that are not connected to any other trail system. The only exception to this is Little Blue Bike Trail which, while located within Meadowmere Park, connects to a county trail (Longview Lake Trail) which is 6.76 miles long. History of Grandview:
Grandview is rich in history!
Starting Out
In 1861 General James Lane led his Jayhawkers out of Kansas into the rolling hills of a future Grandview taking over the farm of Solomon Young, Harry Truman’s grandfather and ardent Unionist. The troops slaughtered 400 hogs and forced his grandmother to bake them biscuits while they shot her chickens.
Grandview began as a modest farming community called Anderson District named in honor of John Anderson, the owner of the only general store in the area, also a friend of You
ng’s. In the late 1800s, the farmers grew fed up with the day long trip to the nearest post office. Inspired by the landscape from the steps of his General Store, Anderson, Young and friend Ervin Wallingford declared it a grand view—and in 1912 a city was born.
A Growing Grandview
In 1912, Grandview became a railroad terminal for Kansas City Southern. The new transportation source brought an influx of people into the town, and by 1929 Grandview had grown into a city of 700 residents. The original depot is still in Grandview next to Grandview City Hall and adjacent to Freedom Park.
Taking Off
Over the decades, Grandview grew from railroads to runways.richards gebaur afbGrandview became a proud military town when the
United States Air Force leased Grandview Air Force Base, later renamed Richards-Gebaur AFB. With it came a surge of military personnel and their families. Right behind them a construction boom. Grandview built its first major shopping center, Truman Corners, which Harry Truman himself dedicated. For decades Grandview enjoyed the comforts of what comes with being a military town; steady construction, thriving businesses and engaged residents, but nothing lasts forever. The department of defense closed Richards-Gebaur and transferred its personnel to Whiteman AFB in Central Missouri. Grandview is a medium-sized city located in the state of Missouri. With a population of 25,256 people and seven constituent neighborhoods, Grandview is the 27th largest community in Missouri.
Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Grandview is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Grandview is a city of sales and office workers, service providers, and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Grandview who work in office and administrative support (17.28%), sales jobs (10.19%), and food service (9.10%).
Also of interest is that Grandview has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.
The percentage of adults in Grandview who are college-educated is close to the national average for all communities of 21.84%: 19.96% of the adults in Grandview have a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree.
The per capita income in Grandview in 2010 was $20,481, which is middle income relative to Missouri, and lower middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $81,924 for a family of four. However, Grandview contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
Grandview is an extremely ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Grandview home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Grandview residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Grandview also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 10.33% of the city’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Grandview include Irish, English, Italian, and French .

But, in my spare time, you will likely find me at the lake on the boat with family and friends. I love going to KC Royals baseball games, watching KU basketball, and watching Tom Brady play football. I love to visit my sis in Chicago or hit the blackjack tables in Vegas. But, most importantly, I love spending my free time with Josh, Rhea, and our 3 puppy dogs – Sammy, KC, and Charlie.
